Cornish Willow Craft
By David Harrison
Cornish fisherman, David Harrison, has been making willow crab and lobster pots since the early 1970's. Fishing out of Coverack with his uncle "Jim" in a Porthleven built wooden fishing vessel, "Pioneer ". In those days they fished 150 willow pots from Sharks Fin including the Manacles to the Blackhead. The shellfish were stored live and once a week the catch was collected by Newlyn shellfish merchants W.H.Harvey and Sons. Each November/December willows were cut, around 150 fishing pots and 4 or 5,"Store Pots" were made. After the completion of pot making fishing for shellfish was resumed, usually in January/February.These days David demonstrates his willow pot making craft several times each year at fish festivals, basket fairs and similar events.
